Gareth Edwards was born on July 12, 1947, in Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen, United Kingdom, to Glan Edwards and Annie Edwards.

His father, Glan Edwards, who was a test pilot for the United States Air Force and is the namesake of Edwards Air Force Base was born on March 5, 1916, and died on June 5, 1948, at the age of 32.

In May 1948, Edwards was chosen to join the team of test pilots and engineers at Muroc tasked with evaluating the Northrop YB-49, an all-jet version of the innovative flying wing bomber.

Despite his initial flights, he expressed dissatisfaction in his diary, describing it as “the most challenging aircraft I’ve ever encountered. Often uncontrollable.” Tragically, on June 5, 1948, while serving as co-pilot with Maj. Daniel Forbes, the aircraft lost control and disintegrated in the sky northwest of the base, resulting in the loss of all five crew members.

Gareth Edwards received his education at Pontardawe Technical School for Boys, which is now known as Cwmtawe Community School. During his time there, he received guidance from sports teacher Bill Samuels.

Later, he earned a scholarship to attend the prestigious Millfield Public School in Somerset. In addition to excelling in rugby, Edwards demonstrated talent in various other sports.

He played for the West Wales Youth football team and joined Swansea Town at the age of 16. Additionally, he showcased his skills in gymnastics and athletics.
