AFCON 2021: Ghana Coach CK Akonnor ‘Thanks God’ After Getting Morocco In Draw

Ghana coach Charles Akonnor has reacted to facing Morocco at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon.

The draw conducted on Tuesday, Yaounde pitted the two heavyweights against each other in Group C, which also contains Gabon and debutants Comoros.

It was also revealed at the draw that the Black Stars will play the Atlas Lions in the first match.

The clash will be a repeat of June’s international friendly match, which the Moroccans 1-0 in Rabat.

“I think the draw is okay. I didn’t come here [to Cameroon] with expectations of which group I want to be in or not. Nowadays, football is evolving and so you cannot expect weaker things,” coach Akonnor told TV3.

“We are preparing feverishly for the tournament and the world cup qualifiers, and I’m sure we will be ready.

“I think we had a strong friendly [match] with Morocco a few months ago and thank God they are in our group. It gives us an idea of the opponent. I am thankful to the Ghana FA for organizing the friendly,” Akonnor added.

Ghana after playing Morocco will face Gabon and wrap up their group stage campaign against Comoros, all matches taking place in Yaounde.

Black Stars would be chasing their fifth Afcon in next year’s tournament scheduled to start on January 9 and end on February 6.

Should Akonnor’s side be successful, it will be Ghana’s first Afcon trophy since 1982.
