The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced that plans are currently in the process of combining with the Voter Identification Card and Ghana Card, allowing holders of both cards to vote during elections in the General Elections of 2024, according to GhanaFeed.
The background information regarding this latest development, Abdul Ganiwu, a spokeswoman for the Authority has told Kofi Adoma Nwanwani all that stands in the way of the smooth implementation of the new rule is the voting station number.
“There is a lengthy term between now and 2024 to engage the Electoral Commission (EC) so that they can generate such information [polling station numbers] for Ghana Card users.” So, if you’re 18 or older, you can tell the EC where you want to vote, and it’ll be done,” he explained.
As per the NIA, 85 percent Ghanaians aged 15 or older have applied for the NIA card.
Mr. Ganiwu explained that the technology is designed to find and update the information of those who aren’t yet age for voting, so that they may exercise their right to vote.
All identity cards currently used to access facilities in Ghana are set to be replaced with Ghana Card.
To help bearers do business through the program, it’s been included in the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) system.
Telecommunication companies are also being told that sim card users must sign up with the company, otherwise their numbers will be removed.
