The Ghanaian Player Who Holds The Record For The Most Ballon d’Or Nominations Revealed

The Ghanaian player who hold the record for the most Ballon d’Or nomination has been revealed, as the world is waiting to hear who will be the winner today.

The Ballon d’Or is an annual football prize presented by the French news magazine “France Football” that is one of the oldest and widely considered to be the most prestigious awards for footballers.

It is now considered a symbol among soccer players and fans, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi winning it five and six times respectively.

As Liberia’s current president George Oppong Weah remains the only African who has won the most prestigious individual prize in football, other Africans have risen to the top of the list, and are getting closer to the crown.

As the world is waiting to hear who will be the 2021 winner of the annual Ballon d’or, some Ghanaians have been nominated before, according to the records, Michael Essien is the most nominated of all.

Essien was nominated in three occasions, with his best position being 22nd, as revealed by the journalist who covers football, Owuraku Ampofo.

Revealing this on Twitter, he wrote;

Michael Essien holds the record for the most #BallonDor nominations by a Ghanaian player. The former Chelsea midfielder was nominated 3 times (2005-2007) with his highest ranking being 22nd.”
