Akufo-Addo has called on the Black Stars of Ghana to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations trophy in Cameroon to end the 40-year drought.
The President of Ghana speaking ahead of the tournament said the team should do all it can to end the 40-year trophy drought by winning the 33rd edition of the AFCON.
“Like with every edition of AFCON the Ghanaian people expect nothing short of ultimate glory from the stars,” he said.
“The pressure to succeed is understandably high because of our status as four-time winners, and also because it has been 40 long years since we last lifted the trophy.
“The target for you, naturally, is to bring the cup home. We have to go a step further than the second places recorded in 1992, 2010 and 2015, and bring the 40-year drought to an end,” the President added.
The Black Stars are seeking to end their 40 years AFCON drought by winning their 5th trophy, after winning their last trophy in 1982 in Libya.
Ghana has been to finals on three times after their last trophy, losing to the Ivory Coast on penalties in 1992 and 2015 and were beaten 1-0 by Egypt in Angola 2010.
Ghana will play their opener game against Morocco today, Monday, January 10, at 4PM before playing Gabon and Comoros respectively in the group stage.
