Who Invented Big Brother? Big Brother is a Dutch reality television show founded by John de Mol Jr. It first began broadcasting within the Netherlands in 1999. It was then subsequently telecast internationally.

The show has contestants known as “housemates” or “HouseGuests” who live in a house that is completely isolated from the outside world.

The name was inspired by Big Brother from George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, and the housemates are constantly monitored during their time in the house through live television cameras and also personal audio microphones.

Throughout the contest, they’re eliminated (usually every week) until there is only one left and is awarded the cash prize.

At the time of August 15, 2021, there had been 504 Big Brother seasons in over 62 franchise regions and countries. The versions in English are usually referred to by its initials, which is “BB”. The title of some Spanish-language editions of this program is translated into Gran Hermano (GH).
