Richard Patrick Versace was an American basketball coach and executive. He was also the first American of Puerto Rican descent to have coached a National Basketball Association team.
Versace was a coach at high school and college level, as well as at the NBA. Versace was a coach for St. Joseph High School in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Gordon Tech in Chicago. It is interesting to note that his first coaching job following college was at Forrest-Strawn – Wing High School, which is located in the tiny Central Illinois community of Forrest, in 1964-65.
The interesting thing is that he was also the head coach of the football team. He helped the team achieve an 8-1 record and won the Vermilion Valley Conference Championship. He was a coach for junior varsity basketball that winter. Versace began his coaching career in college in 1973 at St. Louis University after he had compiled 204-66 records at the high school level of coaching.
He later relocated towards Michigan State University, where he was a major player in the selection of Magic Johnson. His first coaching job as head coach was at Jackson Community College in 1976. In the beginning of the 1980s, he was the head basketball coach for the men’s team at Bradley University, where he helped the team win victory in the 1982 NIT championship.
In the 1985-86 season, Versace was named National College Coach of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. The following season, his Bradley Braves went 32-3 and were ranked as high as number 7 in the country for the entire season. The back court players included the future NBA superstar Hersey Hawkins and the future Bradley Director of Coaching Jim Les.
