Danny Ongais was an American racing driver. Ongais was one of the few native Hawaiian to race at the Indianapolis 500. He raced professionally in sports cars, motorcycles, CART, IndyCar, Formula One, and drag racing. A flashy character on the racing circuit, Ongais was nicknamed “On-Gas” and “The Flyin’ Hawaiian.”
For Formula One, Ongais raced in six Grands Prix, debuting on October 2, 1977, and finished with the best score of seventh. In 1996 at the age of 54, he was the driver in substitute in place of Scott Brayton in the Indianapolis 500 In 1996, as Brayton had passed away in a crash while training in the days prior to the race. Starting last, Ongais was 7th in his final race.
At the 1981 Indianapolis 500, Ongais was involved in a near-fatal crash which resulted in a number of leg and arm fractures and internal injuries.
The following year during the Michigan 500, he spun at the exit from turn 2 and barrel-rolled through the back straight in a race that had many crashes over the course of the race.
He was born on May 21, 1942, in Kahului, Hawaii, United States, and died on February 26, 2022, of congestive heart complications in Anaheim Hills, California, at the age of 79.
