Eric Mercury died on March 14, 2022, at the age of 77, after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was raised in Toronto, Ontario, into a family of musicians. He performed with groups such as The Pharaohs and Eric Mercury and the Soul Searchers in the 1960s, and then moved into New York in 1968 to play solo.

Mercury recorded his first self-titled album, Electric Black Man, in 1969. It was released in the following year. From Village Voice critic Robert Christgau: “Mercury is a fairly skilled performer.

Mercury wrote music for other artists, such as Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway, for whom he also produced. He appeared on stage in Jesus Christ Superstar. Mercury relocated to Los Angeles from 1971 until the Christmas of 1978, at which point Mercury relocated from there to New York. When he returned to Toronto, where he was employed as a producer and manager position for the band Age of Reason.

The band was not able to garner any attention by major labels and Mercury moved into Chicago from 1997 at which point Mercury went back to Toronto.
