Chantal Passamonte, known professionally as Mira Calix was a South African-born, British-based audio and visual artist signed to Warp Records.
While her early music was mostly electronic, from the 2000s onwards, she began to incorporate writing for classical instruments into her music and expanded her work to encompass multidisciplinary performance, films and multi-channel installation artworks.
She often said that she considered sound a sculptural material.
Born in 1970 in South Africa, Mira Calix (real name Chantal Passamonte) moved to London in the year 1991. She started working at the record store and picked the initiative of organizing parties and DJing.
She worked at the labels, 4AD as well as Warp Records, where she was publicist from 1994 until 1997.
Calix’s early music was focused on mixing her vocals in a softer way with a jangling beat and experimental electronic textures and natural sounds. The year 2003 saw her teamed up together with London Sinfonietta for the first time.
As DJ and performer on stage, Calix supported and toured with Radiohead, Boards of Canada, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Autechre, and many other artists.
She appeared on the stages of Sonar, Glastonbury, All Tomorrow’s Parties, Coachella, Latitude and many other festival halls and concert halls.
