Urvashi Vaid Obituary
Urvashi Vaid was an Indian-born American LGBT rights activist, lawyer, and writer.
He was born on October 8, 1958, in New Delhi, India, into a Punjabi Hindu Mohyal Brahmin family of the Vaid clan.
She moved to the United States from India at age eight with her family. At age 11, she participated in the anti-Vietnam war movement.
At Vassar College, she was active in a variety of political and social causes.
She received a Juris Doctor degree from Northeastern University School of Law in Boston in 1983, where she founded the Boston Lesbian/Gay Political Alliance, a non-partisan political organization that interviews and endorses candidates for political office and advocates for Boston’s gay community.
Vaid was the president of the Vaid Group LLC, which collaborates with social justice pioneers groups, movements, and other organizations to address structural injustices that are based on gender identity, sexual orientation, race, gender and economic status.
She was director of Columbia Law School’s Engaging Tradition Project at the Center for Gender and Sexuality Law at Columbia Law School from 2011 until 2015.
The project was focused on the ways in which tradition is used in feminist movements that focus regarding sexuality and gender to help inform, enable or limit the movement.
Vaid died on May 14, 2022, at the age of 63.

Vaid’s burial and funeral dates are not out yet. She will however be buried very soon, and there will be a memorial service after the funeral.
