Bennie Gordon Thompson was born on 28 January 1948 in Bolton, Mississippi. He is an American politician who is serving as the U.S representative for Mississippi’s 2nd congressional district since 1993.
He has chaired the Committee on Homeland Security from 2007 to 2011 and since 2019 with him being the first African American and Democrat to chair the committee.
Thompson who is also the dean of Mississippi’s congressional delegation went to high school at Hinds County Agricultural High School and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Tougaloo College.
He had his Master of Science degree in educational administration from Jackson State University in 1972.
After graduating college, Bennie worked as a schoolteacher in Madison, Mississippi. He then served as an alderman from 1969 to 1973 and then as mayor of Bolton from 1973 to 1980.
Thompson is a lifetime member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Bolton and the dean of Mississippi’s congressional delegation.
