Lisa Ann Murkowski is an American attorney and politician who has served as the senior United States Senator from Alaska since 2002.
Murkowski is the second-most senior Republican woman in the Senate, trailing only Maine Senator Susan Collins.
Murkowski was born in Ketchikan, Alaska Territory, to Nancy Rena Murkowski and Frank Murkowski. Her paternal great-grandfather was of Polish descent, and her mother is of Irish and French Canadian ancestry.
Her family moved around the state as a child due to her father’s job as a banker. In 1980, the same year her father was elected to the United States Senate, she earned a B.A. in economics from Georgetown University.
She is a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and was Alaska’s Cherry Blossom Princess in 1980.

Carol Murkowski Sturgulewski is a third-generation Alaskan who was born in Sitka and has lived in nine towns from the Interior to the Aleutian Islands.
She grew up in a reading family and spent much of her childhood with her nose in a book, thanks to her grandparents’ extensive collection of Alaska titles.
Her interest in regional literature, history, culture, and botany aided her when she began her journalism career in Fairbanks in 1977.
She worked as a writer and editor for Alaska’s three largest newspapers, as well as several smaller papers ranging from the Anchorage Times to the Dutch Harbor Fisherman, for nearly 25 years.
