Liliane Mugabekazi, who is 24 years of age, was imprisoned by Rwandan police after being accused of wearing what authorities have described as a disgraceful dress” at a performance in Kigali, the country’s capital.
On August 7, Mugabekazi was arrested for wearing transparent clothing in public, which is against the laws of the country and is, therefore, a crime according to the Rwanda National Police.
According to a tweet from the police force, offering alcohol to minors and engaging in public immorality are all illegal in Rwanda.
According to the prosecution, Mugabekazi was charged with attending the event while sporting clothing that exposes her private areas. Law enforcement has since pleaded with parents to educate and protect their children from such crimes.
However, a petition circulated online in response to the anger over Mugabekazi’s imprisonment generated more than $10,000.

The 24-year-old does not have any children. However many believe Rwandan law enforcement is scapegoating her as an example in an attempt to clamp down articles of clothing they deem inappropriate and against the culture.
This now forms part of a long list of controversial issues causing many to label Rwanda as a dictatorship.
