As the Hoover Institution’s current director at Stanford University, Rice, 67, is an American diplomat, political scientist, public servant, professor, and professor.
She was the third woman and the first African American to hold the position of secretary of state for the United States, serving in that capacity from 2005 to 2009. Prior to that, from 2001 to 2005, Rice held the position of 20th national security adviser.
Rice was appointed Stanford University’s provost in 1993 and maintained the position for six years. She was the institution’s first female and African American provost. She was also the main academic and financial officer at the institution at the time.
She graduated with a political science bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver in 1974, a master’s from the University of Notre Dame in 1975, and a doctorate from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver in 1981. She began teaching political science at Stanford University in the same year.

Rice never got married. The sole known instance of a romantic relationship occurred when she briefly engaged NFL star Rick Upchurch in the 1970s. Rice and Upchurch broke up because she realized the union was bound to fail.
