He plays for the National Basketball Association (NBA) side the Brooklyn Nets.
Simmons who played junior rugby league started playing basketball at the age of seven, representing the Newcastle Hunters.
He played junior basketball for the Knox Raiders in Melbourne at the age of ten.
Simmons moved to the United States to experience a more competitive environment. He enrolled at Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida where he played high school basketball. He went on to play collegiate basketball for Louisiana State University for only one year.
Simmons represented Australia at the 2012 FIBA Under-17 World Championship at age 15, where he won silver with his team. However, Benjamin has never represented Australia at the national even though he has always expressed the desire to do so; he fails to make the cut.
