Born on October 13, 1940, in Little Rock, Arkansas, United States, Pharoah Sanders was an American jazz saxophonist.

Pharoah, who was a member of John Coltrane’s groups of the mid-1960s, was known for his overblowing, harmonic, and multiphonic techniques on the saxophone, as well as his use of “sheets of sound”.

Pharoah, who is survived by his wife Shukuru and daughter Naima, began his musical career accompanying church hymns on clarinet.

His father worked for the City of Little Rock whiles his mother worked as a cook in a school cafeteria and was the only child of his parents.

Pharoah, who released over 30 albums as a leader, was described by Saxophonist Ornette Coleman as “probably the best tenor player in the world”.
