GFA Urged To Ban Sports Betting In Ghana Premier League To Combat Match-fixing

Kingsley Owusu Achau, the President of Bechem United, has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to institute a ban on sports betting in the Ghana Premier League.

Owusu Achau argues that such a measure when implemented would aid in curbing the menace of match-fixing, which has bedeviled the league in recent times.

A case in point is the high-scoring match between Ashanti Gold and Inter Allies during the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season which raised a lot of red flags.

The GFA’s Disciplinary Committee found the teams guilty of match-fixing and have consequently been demoted to the Division Two League.

As a result, Owusu Achau has called on the GFA to learn from Sudan and prevent sports betting companies from including games from the Ghana Premier League on their websites.

He told Graphic Sport that his proposal comes in the wake of the FA’s inability to stamp out match manipulation. He insists that since the league is the product of Ghana, it has the right to determine who it is used.
