CK Akonnor has criticized Felix Afena-Gyan for rejecting the Black Stars call-up for the 2021 African cup of nations tournament in Cameroon.
The AS Roma forward has rejected a Black Stars call-up twice. The first one was during the last round of the 2022 World cup qualifiers two matches, Ethiopia and South Africa, and the recent AFCON tournament.
However, CK Akonnor believes the Ghana teen shouldn’t have rejected the AFCON call-up, as it was wrong for him to reject the call-up despite his lack of experience.
“It depends on what the boy has in mind and what he wants to achieve. But in all fairness, if you get the chance to play for the national team, you need to take it in good faith,” Akonnor told Accra based Happy FM.
The former Black Stars coach added that despite rejecting Black Stars call-ups, he believes Afena-Gyan will not ditch Ghana for Italy.
“I don’t think he is looking forward to playing for Italy,” he said.
“I will be supporting Ghana. None of us can tell where the team will reach,” Akonnor added after he was asked about whether Ghana can lift the AFCON trophy in Cameroon.
The 2021 African cup of nations will begin today, Sunday, January 9, as the host nation Cameroon will be opening the tournament against Burkina Faso at 4pm.
Ghana will play their first match against Morocco on tomorrow, Monday, January 10, at 4pm before playing Gabon and Comoros respectively in the group stage.
