Afena-Gyan moved to Serie A side Roma’s youth team on 13 March 2021, from EurAfrica FC.
Afena-Gyan was first called up to the senior team on October 24, in Roma’s Serie A game against Napoli. He made his professional debut on October 27, against Cagliari.
On November 21, he came off the bench to score two late goals against Genoa, to give Roma a 2–0 win. The brace made him the first player born in 2003 to score in the Serie A.

AS Roma manager José Mourinho assured the Ghanaian prodigy that he will purchase a new pair of boots if he scored against Genoa. Indeed, Afena-Gyan stepped off the bench and scored two goals in the game as Roma defeated Genoa in a home match, moving to fifth place in the Serie A league table.
The Special One was open about the issue by declaring to reporters: “I had promised to purchase Felix his boots that he likes, but they are expensive. They cost €800, and he rushed over and said to me to remember! The next morning, the first thing I’ll do is purchase these boots.”
Mourinho kept his promise as he bought the boots and handed the parcel to a tearful Afena-Gyan who accepted it with a smile on his face. After that, the 18-year-old Ghanaian professional footballer danced with joy.

José Mourinho later announced that Afena-Gyan isn’t returning to the club’s youth team as the the Portuguese has decided to make the youngster stay on the senior side.
“I am sorry for Mister De Rossi and the Primavera squad, but Felix will stay with us. The Primavera work close to us, so Felix and another four or five players have come across to the senior squad,” said Mourinho.
“You get these kids now who think they know everything, but he is humble, and you can sense he just absorbs all this information from everyone around him. That’s fantastic.
What impressed me the most was his cool head in front of goal. If he is not in terms of technique fantastic, he does have a strong mentality.”
Afena Gyan International Career
On 4 November 2021, Afena-Gyan received his first call-up by the Ghana national team. However, he turned down the invitation for the Black Stars for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia and South Africa.
