Alexey Navalny, the incarcerated Russian opposition leader and vocal critic of the Kremlin, has passed away at the age of 47, according to the Russian prison service.
Navalny gained international attention in 2020 when he was poisoned with a nerve agent. Throughout his career, Navalny consistently challenged President Vladimir Putin’s administration, uncovering instances of corruption, actively opposing the ruling United Russia party, and organizing large-scale anti-government protests.
Despite facing significant risks, he returned to Russia from Germany in 2021, where he had been receiving treatment following the Novichok poisoning.
The Russian prison service announced Navalny’s death on February 16, 2024, citing a purported cause of death as a blood clot.
