Ayman Mohammed Rabie al-Zawahiri was an Egyptian-born physician and theologian who was the leader of the terrorist group al-Qaeda from June 2011 until his death in July 2022.
Following Osama bin Laden death, he succeeded him and was earlier a senior member of Islamist organizations which orchestrated attacks in Asia, Africa, North America, and Europe.
He called on Muslims to kidnap Westerners in Muslim countries in 2012.
The U.S. State Department offered a $25 million reward for information or intelligence leading to Ayman al-Zawahiri’s capture after the September 11 attacks.
He was put under worldwide sanctions in 1999 by the Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee as a member of al-Qaeda.
Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in Kabul by a US drone strike on July 31, 2022. He was 71 years.
