“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of jazz & blues legend #BarbaraMorrison. She mentored our college program vocalists & many of our students have performed with her. A pillar in the music community, she founded @THE_BMPAC & California Jazz & Blues Museum in Leimert Park.” The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz wrote on Twitter.

Born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, United States on September 10, 1949, and raised within Romulus, Michigan, Barbara Morrison recorded her first appearance for broadcasting on the radio in Detroit when she was just 10 years old. In 1973, she moved from Michigan to Los Angeles at the age of 23 and began singing with Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson’s band. Between the mid-1970s and early 1990s, she recorded a number of albums together with Johnny Otis.

In 1986, Morrison was on tour with Philip Morris Superband, completing an entire tour of 14 cities in Canada, Australia, Japan and the Philippines, performing alongside jazz pianist Jimmy Smith and backed by the saxophonist James Moody, guitarist Kenny Burrell, trumpeter Jon Faddis ann Grady Tate on drums.

Morrison has also performed his 33-city tour across the US as part of an all-star tribute to the composer Harold Arlen. In 1995, Morrison performed in a television tribute to Ella Fitzgerald with Mel Torme, Diane Reeves, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Tony Bennett, Dionne Warwick, and Lou Rawls.
