John initiated his rugby journey as a schoolboy, contributing to his local team Cefneithin RFC. In 1964, he transitioned to the first-class West Wales team, Llanelli RFC. During his time with Llanelli, John earned a spot on the Wales national team, stepping in for David Watkins against a touring Australian team.
By 1967, John moved to Cardiff RFC, where he forged a formidable partnership with Gareth Edwards, forming one of the most renowned half-back pairings in global rugby. Their collaboration extended across various levels of the sport, representing Cardiff, Wales, the Barbarians, and the British Lions during the 1968 tour of South Africa.
Unfortunately, John’s participation in the tour was cut short due to a broken collarbone in the first Test match against the South African national team.
