Billy Eugene Self Jr. is an American basketball coach. He is the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Kansas, a position he has held since 2003.
He has led the Jayhawks to 16 Big 12 regular-season championships during his 19 seasons as head coach, including a share of an NCAA record 14 consecutive Big 12 regular season championships. Some of these championships were shared between 2005-2018.
He also led the Jayhawks’ four NCAA Final Four appearances (2008, 2012, 2018, 2022, the 2008 NCAA championship and the 2022 NCAA championship.
Self was inducted into 2017’s Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Self had the 19th-most successful Division I coach in NCAA history, and the 6th active head coach, at the end of the 2020-21 season.
He is second in Kansas history behind Hall of Famer Phog Alley.

Self was born on December 27, 1962, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, United States, to Bill Self Sr. and Margaret Self.
His father, Bill Self Sr., was a former Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association executive director. He was also a state champion basketball coach, coaching Morris High School to a Class B girls state championship at State Fair Arena in 1966.
Known throughout his life as a coach and educator who valued hard work and toughness over everything, Self Sr. is perhaps best known by Kansas fans for the mantra that stuck with his son throughout his playing and coaching life.
“Don’t worry about the mules, just load the wagon,” Self Sr., used to say.
Bill Self Sr., died in January 2022 at the age of 82.
