Gunn attended Sam Houston University in Huntsville. He tried out bull riding with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in his early years but left the sport behind to pursue a career in wrestling.
Gunn whose trainer was Jerry Grey journeyed on the independent circuit for eight years before signing a contract with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF).
