Black Galaxies captain Daniel Afriyie Barnieh received a red card during the match against Sudan on Thursday evening, dealing the team a big blow at the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN), leaving him unavailable for selection if they secure qualification to the knockout round.
Afriyie Barnieh was sent off for what was deemed a dangerous challenge on Walieldin Khdir Safour in the 97th minute of the match, with Ghana winning the game.
The setback did not hold Ghana from claiming victory after Afriyie had converted a second-half penalty, and Konadu Yiadom’s deflected shot found the back of the net, canceling Al Gozoli Nooh’s 31st-minute strike.
Before receiving his watching orders, Afriyie Barnieh had a goal disallowed, this however did not affect the outcome of the game for the Black Galaxies. Seidu Suraj put the game beyond the Sudanese in the extra time of the second half, leaving Ghana second in Group C with six points.
The Black Galaxies will be looking to put in a good performance in the knockout stages without their inspirational captain
