Brit Turner, the drummer of the widely acclaimed Southern rock band Blackberry Smoke, has passed away at the age of 57, as confirmed by the band’s announcement on social media.
Turner had been battling glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer, and underwent surgery for this aggressive condition in November 2022. Despite the challenges, Turner persisted in performing with Blackberry Smoke on tour until December 2023.
As one of the founding members of the band, Turner, alongside his brother Richard Turner, played a pivotal role in shaping Blackberry Smoke’s signature sound.
The band’s most recent album, “Be Right Here,” produced by Dave Cobb, was released on February 16. It entered the Billboard charts at No. 23 for rock albums and No. 26 for country albums.
Since the beginning of 2024, Blackberry Smoke has been touring with a substitute drummer following Turner’s health complications.
Turner’s health struggles came to light when he experienced a heart attack at his home in Atlanta in August 2022. After receiving medical intervention and a stent, he made a swift recovery and returned to the stage. However, in November of the same year, he was rushed to the ER, where an MRI revealed a rare and aggressive brain tumor. Despite undergoing surgery to remove part of his skull to address the tumor, Turner remarkably resumed playing drums on tour within weeks.
