Buster Welch was born on 23 May 1928 near Sterling City, Texas. He was an American cutting horse trainer.
At the tender age of 13, he left home to work on breaking horses and working a large herd of cattle.
He also worked for cattlemen Foy and Leonard Proctor in Midland, Texas. It was with the Proctors that he learned the rudiments of horse riding and working cattle.
Upon leaving the Proctors, the young Welch had a dream of owning his own ranch.
Welch has been inducted into several halls of fame including; the National Cutting Horse Association Riders Hall of Fame, NCHA Members Hall of Fame, Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, and American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame.
At age 18, Buster began manifesting his gifts in cutting horses and by the early 1950 was a well-known figure in the world of cutting horses.
Buster holds the record for the most NCHA World Championship Futurity titles with five wins (1962, 1963, 1966, 1971, and 1977).
