Cale Douglas Makar was born on 30 October 1998 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He is a professional ice hockey player who plays as a defenceman for the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League (NHL).
The Colorado Avalanche selected him the fourth overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He played two seasons in the NCAA with UMass Minutemen before debuting in the NHL in the 2019-20 seasons.
Makar made an instant impact in his debut season in the NHL winning the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year.
He won the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the best defenceman in the league in his third professional season; he was nominated for the same award the previous season.
Cale who is regarded as one of the best defencemen and best players in the modern game has also won the 2022 Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche.
He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the 2022 playoffs.
