Chaim Kanievsky died on March 18, 2022, at the age of 94. Reports indicate that he collapsed at his home in Bnei Brak. Medics were called to his house, however, attempts to resuscitate him remained futile.
HaRav Chaim Kanievsky was born in Pinsk, Poland, on January 8, 1928, to Rabbi Yaakov Yaisrael Kanievsky, known as the “Steipler Gaon”, and Rebbitzen Miriam Karelitz (Pesha Miriam: Pesha was added), sister of Rabbi Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz, known as the “Chazon Ish”.
He was six years old when his family moved to Israel. Since his immigration, he did not even leave Israel for a moment.
He married Batsheva Eliashiv, daughter of Rabbi Yosef Sholom.
Rabbi Kanievsky’s spouse died in 2011. He received thousands of visits each year from Jews seeking religious and Halachic advice at the time of his passing.
Until his death, Rabbi Kanievsky was, together with Ponevezh Yeshiva chief Rabbi Gershon Edelstein from the death of Rabbi Aharon Jehuda Shteinman in December 2017, was widely considered one of the leaders within the Israeli Haredi community.
