The first female and African American provost of Stanford University is Condoleezza Rice. As the first African American woman to occupy the position of national security advisor in 2001, Rice then went on to become the first Black woman to assume the position of secretary of state for the United States.
Birmingham, Alabama is where Rice was born on November 14, 1954. Rice, the sole child of a Presbyterian minister and a teacher, was raised in the segregated South in an environment that was hostile to racism.

She graduated with a political science bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver in 1974, a master’s from the University of Notre Dame in 1975, and a doctorate from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver in 1981. She began teaching political science at Stanford University in the same year.
In 1993, Rice was also appointed Stanford University’s first female and African American provost, a position she maintained for six years. She was also the university’s chief academic and financial officer at the time.
