English actor and singer Dennis Waterman has passed away.

Waterman was best known for his tough-guy leading roles in television series including The Sweeney, Minder and New Tricks, singing the theme tune of the latter two.

Waterman’s acting career spanned 60 years, starting with his childhood roles in film and theatre, and his adult roles in film, television, and West End theatre.

The late actor was known for the range of roles he played, including drama (Up the Junction), horror (Scars of Dracula), adventure (Colditz), comedy (Fair Exchange), comedy-drama (Minder), musical (Windy City) and sports (The World Cup: A Captain’s Tale), as well as police TV series such as The Sweeney.

Waterman, who was banned from driving for three years in January 1991, following his second drink-driving conviction in four years, appeared in 29 films, the last was released in 2020.

We are terribly heartbroken to announce that our dear Dennis died away quite quietly at his home in Spain,” his agency stated in a statement.

The family respectfully requests that our privacy be maintained at this very painful time,” they stated, adding that he died on Sunday afternoon.

Waterman was born on February 24, 1948, in Clapham Town, London, United Kingdom and died at his home in Spain on May 8, 2022, at the age of 77.

Waterman was a fan of Chelsea F.C. His love of football was reflected in his being chosen to present Match of the Seventies from 1995 to 1996, a nostalgic BBC show celebrating the best football matches from the 1970s.
