Farmer held an MD and PhD from Harvard University. He was also the Kolokotrones University Professor and chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
He was co-founder and chief strategy of Partners In Health (PIH), a non-profit international organization that has been providing direct health care services since 1987 and also engaged in advocacy and research on behalf of the poor and sick. He was professor of medicine and the chief of Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Farmer and his colleagues abroad and in the U.S. have developed novel community-based treatment strategies that allow for high-quality health care delivery in resource-poor areas in the U.S. as well as abroad.
He was born on October 26, 1959, in North Adams, Massachusetts, United States, and died on February 21, 2022.
