Elaine Lan Chao, an American entrepreneur, and former government official was born on March 26, 1953. She was a Republican who served in the Trump administration as the 18th secretary of transportation from 2017 to 2021.
In the George W. Bush administration, she served as the 24th secretary of labor from 2001 to 2009. Chao was the first Asian American woman to hold a cabinet position in history.
Chao, born in Taipei, Taiwan, moved to the US when she was eight years old. The Foremost Group, established by her father, eventually developed into a significant shipping company. Chao was raised in Long Island, New York, and went on to graduate from Harvard Business School and Mount Holyoke College.
