With the ruling on abortion, the justices of the Supreme Court come under scrutiny regarding their political stance.
Elena Kagan has long been considered as being on the left-wing of the Supreme Court although others argue her rulings are actually representative of a centrist. She does however have a history with the Democratic party.
Kagan joined the faculty of the University of Chicago Law School in 1991 as an assistant professor. It was there that she first met Barack Obama, a visiting lecturer at the institution.
She was hired by Senator Joe Biden in 1993 to serve as the Senate Judiciary Committee’s special counsel.
She worked on Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s Supreme Court nomination hearings during this period. Kagan also served as Associate White House Counsel for Bill Clinton from 1995 to 1996.
