Elise Mertens was born on 17 November 1995 in Leuven, Belgium.
She is a Belgian professional tennis player who is currently ranked as world No.1 in the doubles competition; this was reached on 10 May 2021.
On 26 November 2018, she attained her highest career ranking of world No. 12 in the singles.
Mertens was introduced to the game of tennis as a four-year-old by her older sister. She is a fluent speaker of speaking French, English, and Flemish Dutch having been homeschooled.
She counts Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters whose Academy she is currently a member of, as her idols. She has been training at the Kim Clijsters Academy since 2015.
Mertens turned professional in 2013 and is currently coached by Simon Goffin. She has 11 singles and 13 doubles titles on the ITF Circuit and also six singles and 15 doubles titles on the WTA Tour.
Mertens live in Hamont-Achel in Belgium.
