Erna Zahn was born Erna Amelia Augusta Miller in Winnebago County, Wisconsin on 14 April 1908.
Her parents were Henry and Olga Miller.
Zahn counted Herbert Miller as her older brother and Adeline and Marjorie as her younger sisters.
She was fun-loving as a young girl, engaging in horseback riding, swimming, and sewing.
In 1935 she married her husband Meilahn Zahn who was the head of the music department of Martin Luther College for over a decade.
Zahn’s mother died at the age of 95 while both of her younger sisters dead at 97 revealing the fact that longevity runs in her blood.
After the death of Evelyn Kleine on 7 December 2019, she became the oldest known living person in Minnesota.
On 21 June 2022, at the age of 114 years, 68 days, she surpassed the age of Anna Stoehr to become the oldest person ever to reside in the state of Minnesota.
