Born on May 27, 1959, in Toronto, Canada, Biovail Corporation was once Canada’s most prominent publicly traded pharmaceutical company, with more than C$1 billion in annual revenue. He was its founder, chairman, and CEO.

By 2010, he had sold nearly all of his company holdings. Canadian Business magazine placed Melnyk at 79th on its 2017 list of Canada’s 100 richest people, with a net worth of $1.21 billion. He was one of Barbados’s richest residents.

Melnyk was admitted for end-stage liver failure. He received a liver transplant in May 2015 at the Toronto General Hospital after an anonymous donor was found through a public appeal. Melnyk, who was 62 years old, died March 28, 2022, from an undisclosed condition.
