German actress and singer Eva-Maria Hagen was born on October 19, 1934, and she passed away on August 16, 2022. She was the offspring of East Brandenburg agricultural laborers.
She was fired for political reasons and was dubbed the “Brigitte Bardot of the GDR.”
She began her training at the Berlin-based Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1952 after finishing an apprenticeship as a machinist. 1953 saw her join the Berliner Ensemble. Hagen made her stage debut in 1953 at the Berliner Ensemble in Bertolt Brecht’s production of Erwin Strittmatter’s play Katzgraben. She wed Hans Oliva-Hagen in 1954, and the couple had a daughter named Catherine (aka Nina Hagen). She made her film debut in the 1957 comedy Don’t Forget My Little Traudel, directed by Kurt Maetzig.
