Only $2 million of the $25 millions required for preparations for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations has been raised by the Government of Ghana.
Mustapha Ussif, the Sports Minister, revealed the total amount raised so far at the parliament floor on Tuesday, December 14, 2021.
The minister urged corporate bodies to help the Black Stars to ensure a smooth AFCON.
He also requested that Ghanaians support the team without any political affiliation.
The Sports Ministry has been seeking funds to support the preparations for the national team. They had originally targeted $25 million for both the Nations Cup qualifiers and the World Cup qualifiers.
The management committee of the Black Stars met with the Ghana Football Association in order to discuss plans for AFCON 2021. These included the submission of a provisional squad and the expansion of Milovan Rajevac’s backroom staff.
On December 22, Ghana will begin camping in Qatar.
The team has scheduled three friendlies, including a match against African champions Algeria.
