In 2013, Geingob underwent brain surgery and an aortic operation in South Africa the following year. He later revealed that he successfully battled prostate cancer in 2014.

On January 8, 2024, Geingob disclosed that he had been diagnosed with cancer once again. He sought treatment in the United States starting on January 25 and returned to Namibia on January 30 after a two-day treatment.

Tragically, on February 4, Vice President Nangolo Mbumba announced Geingob’s passing at Lady Pohamba Hospital in Windhoek, where he had been undergoing treatment. Mbumba mentioned that Geingob’s wife and children were by his side during his final moments. He was 82.

Shortly after Geingob’s death, Vice President Nangolo Mbumba was formally sworn in as the acting President of Namibia. The ceremony took place at State House in Windhoek, occurring approximately 15 hours after Geingob’s passing. A government spokesperson stated that Mbumba would serve the remainder of Geingob’s term, set to expire on March 21, 2025.
