Linstead, who was born in London in 1938, moved to Australia to work as a professional actor with an English touring company.
She quickly realized that acting was not for her and pursued a career as a casting director for International Casting Services, representing actresses.
Linstead then co-founded M&L Casting Consultants with Liz Mullinar, which became a widely influential company that managed casting for productions such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Jesus Christ Superstar, as well as Australian films such as “Picnic at Hanging Rock” and “Sunday Too Far Away.”
In 1985, she co-founded Hilary Linstead & Associates with Vicki Harper, where she represented writers Louis Novra and Andrew Bovell, as well as performers Wendy Harmer, Magda Szubansky, and Gene Kitson.
In 2000, the agency was renamed HLA Management, and one of her charges, Kate Richter, now runs it.
