Ash Barty, World No. 1 has stunned the tennis world by announcing her retirement from the sport at the age of 25. She made the shocking announcement during an emotional interview with Casey Dellacqua, which she shared on Instagram on Wednesday, March 23, 2022.
“I’m so happy, and I’m so ready. I just know at the moment in my heart, for me as a person, this is right,” she said.
“I know that people may not understand it. I’m OK with that. Because I know that Ash Barty the person has so many dreams she wants to chase after that don’t necessarily involve travelling the world, being away from my family, from my home, which is where I’ve always wanted to be,” she added.
Why Did Barty Retire From Tennis?
Ash Barty pulled the plug on her stunning career ‘to chase other dreams’ just weeks after winning the Australian Open, six months after claiming the Wimbledon title last year.
Barty took a break from tennis in 2014, citing its intense demands, and played in the inaugural season of cricket’s Women’s Big Bash League. She said that was “a very different feeling” to her retirement on Wednesday, adding tennis had “given me all my dreams plus more”.
