Stephen King was born on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine, United States. Donald Edwin King, his father, was a seaman in the merchant trade that was born under the name Pollock but changed his name to King when he grew up.
His mother was Nellie Ruth King (nee Pillsbury). The couple got married at Scarborough, Maine, on July 23, 1939. After that, they stayed with the family of Donald in Chicago before moving to Croton-on Hudson, New York. King’s parents returned home to Maine at the close of the World War II, living in a humble home in Scarborough.
When King was just two years older, his dad resigned from the family. His mother took care of him and his brother David all by herself, and sometimes with a heavy financial burden. They relocated from Scarborough and were dependent on family members in Chicago; Croton-onHudson, West De Pere, Wisconsin; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Malden, Massachusetts; and Stratford, Connecticut.
When King was 11 years old, his family relocated from the city of Durham, Maine, where his mother looked after his parents until they passed away. Then, she became a caretaker at a local facility for people with mental disabilities. King was raised Methodist, however, he renounced his faith in organized religion when he was in high school. Although he is no longer a religious person, King says he believes that God exists.
King attended Durham Elementary School, and graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in Lisbon Falls, Maine, in the year 1966. King showed early interest in horror and was an avid reader of EC horror comics such as Tales from the Crypt, and later, he paid homage to the classic comics with his screenplay Creepshow.
He began writing for pleasure while still at school. He contributed stories to Dave’s Rag, the newspaper his brother edited using a mimeograph machine, he later started selling his stories inspired by films he’d seen to his friends (he was required to pay back the profits when discovered by teachers.)
One of the first stories that was independently released included “I Was a Teenage Grave Robber,” which was serialized in over four issues (three published and one not) in a fanzine called Comics Review, in 1965. The story was published later that year in a revised version in the form of “In a Half-World of Terror” in a different fanzine called Stories of Suspense, edited by Marv Wolfman. When he was a teenager, King also won a Scholastic Art and Writing Award.
From 1966, King attended the University of Maine, graduating in 1970 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in English. His daughter Naomi Rachel was born in the same year. He wrote a column called Steve King’s Garbage Truck for the student publication, The Maine Campus, and was a participant in the writing workshop run by Burton Hatlen.
King held a variety of jobs to help pay for his education, including gas pump attendant, as well as a worker in the industrial laundries. King was married to his wife, fellow student Tabitha Spruce, at the University’s Fogler Library after one of Professor Hatlen’s workshops, they tied the knot in.
