The American rapper and actor Ja Rule known privately as Jeffrey Bruce Atkins was born on 29 February 1976 in New York City.
His maternal grandparents raised Atkins due to the nature of his mother’s work which kept her away for a majority of the time.
His grandparents raised him as a Jehovah’s Witness but he left the religion at the age of 12 and hit the streets dealing drugs.
Jeffrey began his music career in 1994 as a member of the hip-hop group Cash Money Click alongside Chris Black and O-1.
His first solo appearance was made on Mic Geronimi’s “Time to Build” alongside Jay-Z and DMX who were just starting out too.
His debut album Venni Vetti Vecci was released in 1999 and had its lead single as “Holla Holla” while his first film appearance was, in “Turn It Up”.
In 2012, Ja Rule was sentenced to a two-year prison term for gun possession and tax evasion. He was released from prison on May 7, 2013.
