James was born on June 16, 1935, in Sunderland, County Durham, England to his father, Robert Alfred Bolam, who was from Northumberland, and his mother, Marion Alice Drury, from County Durham.

Bolam went to Bemrose School, Derby, after he had completed his education at Sunderland’s Bede Grammar School.
Bolam was a chartered accountant before becoming an actor.
He also studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, where he won both the Margaret Rawlings Cup and the gold medal.
He was unable to pay his fees, so he worked at Lyons Corner House tearoom, West End restaurants and washed dishes at night whilst studying during the day.
