James Joseph Florio was an American Democratic politician who served as the 49th governor of New Jersey from 1990 to 1994.
Born on August 29, 1937, in New York, New York, United States, Florio is the first American of Italian descent to hold the position.
The son of Lillian Ellen Florio and Vincenzo Joseph Florio, James served as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly from 1970 to 1975 and from 1975 to 1990 in the United States House of Representatives.
He died from heart failure at a hospital in Voorhees, New Jersey, on September 25, 2022, at the age of 85.
