James Joseph Florio was an American Democratic politician who passed away from heart failure at a hospital in Voorhees, New Jersey, on September 25, 2022, at the age of 85.
Born on August 29, 1937, in New York, New York, United States, as the first American of Italian descent to serve as governor of New Jersey, Florio served as the 49th governor of New Jersey from 1990 to 1994.
Florio, who is survived by his wife Lucinda Coleman and three children, served as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly from 1970 to 1975 and from 1975 to 1990 in the United States House of Representatives.

James had two siblings; brothers Richard Florio and William Francis Florio. Born to their parents Lillian Ellen Florio and Vincenzo Joseph Florio, they were raised in the Kensington subsection of Flatbush in Brooklyn, New York.
