Javier Aguirre Onaindía, nicknamed El Vasco, is a Mexican former professional footballer and manager.
He is currently in charge of Spanish team RCD Mallorca.
Aguirre was a player for Mexico during the 1986 World Cup, and was twice the manager of the Mexico team that took Mexico into the World Cup in 2002 and in 2010.
Aguirre made 59 appearances for the Mexico national team between 1983 and 1992, scoring 13 goals.
He played in the FIFA World Cup in 1986, and was sent off in the quarter-final defeat to West Germany.
He also took home his first CONCACAF Gold Cup and led them to the final of the 2001 Copa America. In the following years, he managed Japan as well as Egypt.
At the club level, Aguirre was the leader of six teams within Spain’s La Liga.
He was fourth in the league with Osasuna during 2006 as well as Atletico Madrid in 2008, and also guided the former into the 2005 Copa del Rey Final.
